What Actually Happens to Your Car After You Sell It
When your car leaves your North Shore driveway in our truck, what happens next? Most sellers don't know โ and the answer is more interesting than "it gets crushed". Here's the full lifecycle.
Stage 1: Pickup & Transport (Hour 0โ2)
Our driver loads your vehicle and transports it to our processing yard. NZTA paperwork is already complete โ your name is off the vehicle from the moment of pickup.
Stage 2: Inventory & Triage (Day 1)
On arrival at the yard, every vehicle is photographed, VIN-recorded, and triaged into one of four categories:
- Repair-and-resell (5% of vehicles): minor damage, easily fixable, market value exceeds repair cost
- Premium parts strip (30% of vehicles): valuable parts identified for the second-hand market
- Standard dismantling (55% of vehicles): full strip-down for all salvageable components
- Direct to recycling (10% of vehicles): too damaged or rusted for parts; straight to metal recycling after depollution
Stage 3: Depollution (Day 1โ2)
Before any dismantling, every vehicle goes through depollution to NZ environmental standards. This includes:
- Engine oil drained and recycled
- Coolant captured and disposed of safely
- Remaining fuel pumped out
- Air conditioning refrigerant captured (illegal to vent โ strict EPA-equivalent rules)
- Battery removed (recycled separately; lead and acid both recovered)
- Tyres removed (regulated tyre disposal stream)
- Airbags safely deactivated
- Mercury switches removed where present
Only after full depollution does dismantling begin.
Stage 4: Parts Removal & Inventory (Days 2โ14)
For vehicles in the "premium parts" or "standard dismantling" categories, our team systematically removes and catalogues every salvageable component:
- Engine โ tested, photographed, listed
- Transmission โ tested, drained, listed
- Alternator, starter, water pump โ tested electrically
- ECUs and modules โ VIN-coded to potential buyers
- Body panels โ colour-matched, inventoried
- Doors โ complete with electrics
- Glass โ windscreens, side windows, sunroofs
- Wheels and tyres (if usable)
- Interior โ seats, dashboards, trim panels
- Lights, mirrors, bumpers, grilles
Each part is entered into our database with photos, fitment data, and asking price. Listings go live within 48 hours.
Stage 5: Parts Resale (Days 7โ365+)
Parts are sold through multiple channels:
- Walk-in customers at our yard
- Online (our website, NZ wrecker networks)
- Trade Me and other classifieds
- Direct to repair shops we have relationships with
- Trade to other wreckers nationally
- Export markets for specific rare parts
Average inventory turnover: ~6 months. Fast-movers (Hilux parts, Land Cruiser parts, common BMW/Mercedes parts) sell within weeks. Slow-movers (obscure JDM specifics) can take 1โ2 years.
Stage 6: Catalytic Converter Processing
Cats are removed early and processed separately because of their precious metal content (platinum, palladium, rhodium). They go to specialist NZ precious-metal recovery facilities. The platinum-group metals are smelted out and re-enter the global commodities market.
Stage 7: Final Recycling (Day 14โ60)
Once stripped of all viable parts, the depolluted shell goes to metal recycling. The process:
- Shell crushed/baled at our yard or transferred to a metal recycler
- Mixed-metal crushing and shredding
- Magnetic separation (ferrous metals โ steel/iron)
- Eddy-current separation (non-ferrous โ aluminium, copper)
- Sorted streams sold to smelters domestically and internationally
- Smelted into new steel/aluminium for new vehicles, construction, manufacturing
The Environmental Math
One end-of-life car typically yields:
- ~750kg of recovered steel (re-enters manufacturing)
- ~80kg of aluminium
- ~30kg of copper
- ~15kg of lead (mostly from battery)
- ~80kg of rubber (tyres)
- ~150kg of glass and plastics (some recyclable)
- 50โ200 individual salvaged parts going back into other cars on the road
That's roughly 1 tonne of materials diverted from landfill per vehicle. North Shore residents collectively keep thousands of tonnes per year out of waste streams through cash for cars services.
What Doesn't Happen
- Cars are not abandoned anywhere
- Fluids are not dumped or burnt
- Tyres are not stockpiled illegally
- Vehicles are not "lost" between pickup and processing โ full chain of custody, GPS-tracked trucks
