Japanese Imports on the North Shore โ Special Considerations
Japanese imports โ the Hiace, Estima, Caldina, Crown, Aristo and dozens more โ make up a huge share of vehicles on North Shore roads. Selling them is slightly different to selling an NZ-new car. Here's what changes.
Why Japanese Imports Are So Common on the North Shore
From the late 1990s, NZ imported huge numbers of used cars from the Japanese domestic market (JDM). They're often well-spec'd, low-km, well-maintained, and arrived here cheaper than NZ-new equivalents. The result: a North Shore car-park lottery of obscure-to-Kiwi-eyes models โ Toyota Aristo, Nissan Cefiro, Honda Odyssey JDM, Mazda Bongo, Subaru Forester STi, and many more.
How JDM Import Pricing Differs
1. Parts Compatibility
Some JDM models share parts with their NZ-new equivalents (Hilux is Hilux), but others are unique to the Japanese market. JDM-specific parts can be harder to source โ which sometimes raises the value because demand exceeds supply.
2. Speedometer in km vs Original
JDM speedos originally read in km/h but the certification process converts them. Original speedos still on a car may indicate fresher import โ usually a small positive for valuation.
3. Service History
Lower-spec imports often arrive in NZ with no service history. This compresses pricing slightly but doesn't dramatically affect cash-for-cars offers.
4. Specifications Differ
JDM Skylines, Imprezas, Crowns and others often have higher-spec engines and trims than NZ-new equivalents. Parts demand reflects this โ JDM WRX/STI parts are gold.

JDM Vans โ Strong Premium Category
Japanese vans (Hiace, Bongo, Caravan, Town Ace) are exceptional value-holders on the North Shore. Tradies, campers and small-business owners chase them. Even 25-year-old examples regularly fetch $1,500+.
What If My Import Is Damaged or Non-Running?
Still strong demand. JDM parts have specific buyers who maintain other imports โ engines, gearboxes, dashboards, suspension components, body panels in original colours. Even badly damaged JDM imports often pay $800+.
De-Registered or Compliance-Issue Imports
Some older imports become uneconomical to re-comply for WoF and end up sitting in driveways across the North Shore. We buy these. Compliance issues don't affect our offer โ we don't need to re-comply for sale purposes.
